Fortunately, most people are able to take for granted one of the most fundamental rights of being human - choosing your life partner. The decision is so much more than sexual. It is a union in mind, body and spirit that takes both partners through life. The best defense of marriage is to encourage people to make a life commitment based on strong foundations rather than send people into exile or false forced ceremonies. People have learned that traditions of slavery, bigotry, sexism and hate were wrong. Hopefully, people will learn every relationship of loving consenting adults only adds to the strength of society.

In June 1967 the Supreme Court overturned state laws that had regionally banned interracial marriage. The Supreme Court case that ended all race-based marriage restrictions was Loving v. Virginia.Mrs. Mildred Loving, was plaintiff in the case and she died on May 2nd, 2008. Having lived through the injustice of anti-miscegenation laws vividly, she intrinsically understood the evil of laws that did not respect fundamental human rights.

There seems little disagreement that marriage is a sacrament. If so, religious groups have the right to regulate that. I would not impose my religious beliefs on others and I certainly don't expect the government of the United States that was founded in religious freedom to impose religious doctrine on me.
Twenty years prior to 1967, most states had laws banning interracial marriage. One of the blessings of our human experience is to evolve, throwing off the chains of slavery, embracing freedom and equality for all men and woman, and truly respecting the pursuit of happiness such that no other is lessened by it. Howard Stern can be funny. He can be mean. He can enlighten the world and darken it in the same show. There is a respect in a free country for free expression.
